The Emerging Field of Educational Neuroscience

Educational neuroscience (also known as mind, brain and education [MBE] or neuroeducation) is an emerging scientific field that brings together researchers from neuroscience, psychology, and education to explore the underlying neurocognitive processes underlying educational practice and theory (Ansari & Coch, 2006; Goswami, 2006; Meltzoff, Kuhl, Movellan, & Sejnowski, 2009). The field’s ultimate goal is to improve teaching methods and curricula, and to maximize children’s ability to thrive. Read More.

NCTQ Releases New Report on Schools of Education

On June 17, the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) released the second edition of its annual review of teacher preparation programs in the United States, Teacher Prep Review 2014. When Educational Promises Are Too Good to Be True

IDA Fact SHeets When a child struggles to read, parents and educators want to do everything possible to help that child keep up with his or her peers and be successful in school. But as much as we want that to happen overnight, that is not how it usually works. It can take years of hard work, even with the best teachers and instruction. Unfortunately, some organizations or individuals may take advantage of parents when they are most vulnerable by making exaggerated claims or false guarantees based on “pseudo science.” This fact sheet provides guidance in learning to critically evaluate programs, avoid scams, and move forward toward providing instruction that will truly help the children who need it. Read More.

New Dyslexia Resolution Introduced

On June 12, 2014, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) introduced the Sydney Crawford Resolution, House Simple Resolution 623, to increase awareness and to support further research and treatment of dyslexia and related learning disabilities. The resolution, which was referred to the Committee on Education and the Workforce, was inspired by a courageous eleven-year old girl who openly and proudly talks about her dyslexia, the challenges she faces and her drive to conquer them.  H. Res. 623 not only recognizes the challenges that individuals with learning disabilities face but also the importance and need for properly trained teachers, support, research, and awareness. Read More.

Interview: IDA Past Vice President Louisa Moats

IDA’s Historical Archives Committee took on the task of videotaping interviews of all the previous IDA Presidents who are still alive. A previous vice-president, Louisa Moats, was also interviewed. The interviews were carried out at the 2012 Annual Conference in Baltimore. Members of the committee conducted the interviews. They are Wilson Anderson, Karen Dakin, Marcia Henry, Amy Lawrence, Martha Renner, and Mark Westervelt. Mark provided the technical support for the videotaping. The videos, starting with Drake Duane, MD., appear in The Examiner. This month we have Karen Dakin interviewing Louisa Moats, Ed.D. Thank you to all who made these videos, so rich in IDA history, as well as rich in the history of the field of dyslexia, possible. Click Here to view Louisa’s interview. Click Here to view the Past-Presidents Video Library.
