Decoding Dyslexia is a grassroots parent advocacy group. We are a unique group that supports one another, as well as advocates for better dyslexia legislation, both on the national and local levels. Decoding Dyslexia holds dyslexia awareness events and conducts support groups, among other things.
In four short years of existence, Decoding Dyslexia has a strong presence in 50 states plus Canada and has a social media reach of over 130,000.
Decoding Dyslexia state founders and members have attended the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) conferences for years. In the past few years, we have conducted Parent sessions, including interactive luncheons and a roundtable discussions. Decoding Dyslexia helped run parent sessions for three out of the last four years of IDA conferences, beginning with the year after IDA added the Parent Session track, to help support the growing number of parents attending IDA conferences.
The 2015 IDA Conference at Grapevine, Texas, was a great conference for both IDA and Decoding Dyslexia.
Decoding Dyslexia held an interactive luncheon attended by 200 people, including experts, teachers, and parents. Five Decoding Dyslexia parents served as panelists and answered many terrific questions from the attendees. It was emotional at times, and people really took away a great deal from this session.
Another parent session included an “Ask the Experts” session, conducted in collaboration with the Dallas Branch of IDA. Approximately 90 people attended the session and got first-hand advice from experts in many fields, including assistive technology.
The Decoding Dyslexia booth at IDA was well attended as well. Decoding Dyslexia families from over 20 states in the U.S. and two Canadian provinces attended the IDA conference this year to learn at the sessions and network with one another. A wonderful Decoding Dyslexia dinner also took place which provided members another opportunity to network.
Several other Decoding Dyslexia leaders also had individual IDA sessions that were also well attended.
